The handheld is getting old with the Nintendo DS around (is it me, or did the GBA never really get much attention when it came to games? I mean, what great games did we really get? That's just me though). However, you're a person who realised the beauty of the game, or else you wouldn't be reading this, right? The game is about... drilling. That's right, about drilling. At first it reminded me of Gurumin (a Japanese game by Falcom, the guys that the games like Ys and Xanadu). It still does, because the concept of little girl with a big drill is hard to shake off. Either way, you just drill your way around the level, upgrade the thing and defeat some enemies here and there. Easy concept, great fun. You'll notice I include conversations in my walkthrough. You may wonder why, but my answer is clear and simply. It makes the guide more complete, and it's easier to find a part where you need more information. If you're stuck right after Grutch told you to dance around naked, you can just browse around and find the correct part much, much easier. ============================================================================== Walkthrough [DD.03.01] ============================================================================== Grutch: "Looks like we're here! The Red Diamond those evil Skullkers stole from us has to be in his hideout! They're probably waiting for you, so watch yourself in there! Gearmo and I will be supporting you from back here at the trailer. Call us with your Drill Dozer's comm system if you get into trouble!" Gearmo: "Heh. Don't swear it, Grutch. She can take care of herself!" Our main character then drills into the building and... falls into a trap. Grutch: "Are you OK, Boss? You must have sprung a Skullker trap and fallen into a pit! Is your Drill Dozer still in one piece? BOSS?! Can you hear me, Boss?! You're still inside your Drill Dozer, aren't you?! What?! You're not?! We've got to get you back to your Dozer! Hmmm. You can still hear me, right? That means it has to be close by. Hop back into it!" You hop back into the Drill Dozer, and Gearmo talks to you. Gearmo: "It takes a lot more than a nasty fall to take a Drill Dozer outta commission! Just listen to that engine purr. I built it myself! I tightened every screw and greased every gear. It won't let you down! But you're gonna have to find a way back to the surface. I can fix you back up at the trailer. Just do whatever it takes to get our of there!" Grutch: "You're tough, Boss! Show 'em what you've got! Your Drill Dozer is still working, so you should be able to get out of there. Why don't you snoop around a little?" And this is where the game starts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Area 1-1 - Skullker Hideout [DD.03.02] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Walk to the right, and the first reminder will start - "Press R or L to spin your drill! Press and hold R or L to rev up your drill and max out your power gauge!". Give it a spin ~ "You can even drill stuff above and below you! Now get out there and try it!". So now you know this, drill into the wall ahead. Grutch: "Whoa there, Boss! Are you feeling a little dizzy? You're probably still a little woozy from that fall. You'll be all right! Your Drill Dozer can shred through these old walls like wet paper! Go wild and drill right through this wall in front of you!" Listen to the old man that'll call you many times and make this guide bigger than it should be. Once you reached the next area, you'll get a call. Press B to accept them. Grutch: "Boss! You're inside the Skullker hideout! Keep on busting through their base, but watch out for traps!" Dig through the yellow blocks. Behind and between the blocks are various posters with things like: "Attention, Skullkers: Business minions must always put on a fake smile. Thug minions are required to frown and look intimidating at all times." "Press START to reach the save menu!" "If you need help, press SELECT and press the A Button to read the help file!" Once you reached the next area, you'll notice a door comes down. Of course, someone has to call you about it. Gearmo: "Hey, Jill! Let me tell you real quick about that self-repairing barrier up ahead. The Skullkers keep their hideout heavily guarded!" Grutch: "Self-repairing barriers? What are you babbling about?" Gearmo: "I'm saying this thing can repair itself even when it's being drilled! You're gonna have to upgrade your Drill Dozer's gears to drill through it. Luckily for you, there's a gearbox nearby. Look around for a bright red box!" Don't you love how Grutch doesn't even know anything about their targets building? Jump up, drill through the wall and get the second gear. Gearmo: "You just found another gear! Way to go! Hey! Are you paying attention?!" ~ "Shifting up to another gear adds a lot of power to your drill! When your drill is spinning, press R at just the right time to shift! Right... now! When you see Shift Up, press R again! Remember, press R when you see Shift Up to shift gears! You have to gold R after shifting up to keep your drill spinning at max power! Go on! Give it a try! Press R a second time when you see Shift Up." Grutch: "Learning to shift up is important. It's easily your most powerful weapon! Don't worry if you're not great at it now. You'll get better as you go along. If you forgot how to do anything, press SELECT... And then press the A Button to read the help file!" Well, let's go on. Destroy the door for a nice... call. Gearmo: "Nice work! You drilled right through that barrier! Your new gear will have you destroying stuff even faster than usual!" Grutch: "You should keep your drill spinning even while you're moving around. That was, you can protect yourself from incoming bullets!" Enter the door to head to the next area. When you proceed, multiple enemies will come in and attack you from both sides. Once you survived, continue and drill open the box. Jump up and continue by drilling away the big yellow blocks. Note how you need to jump and then drill. You'll hover in the air while doing this. When you head down, you'll get a short call, but this time it's something you might want to know. Gearmo: "See that metal block? It's made of some kind of super-strong alloy! Your Drill Dozer's standard drill won't even scratch it! Shifting up won't help either. So don't bother! You're gonna have to find another way around." A complete mystery! Let's just head up instead and drill the wall away. Watch out for the electricity, and be sure to drill the box above you (you can drill up, after all). Enter the door after that. This area is pretty clear, just drill until you reached a weird device... and a call. Grutch: "There are all kinds of crazy lifts in this factory." Gearmo: "See that one above you? It's called a Socket Lift. Drill into the socket! You'll latch onto it as long as you spin your drill." Drill the yellow block away, and just keep going. The lift will pass by and grab you. Stop drilling when you're hovering above the platform. Find the door and continue. The next room has two doors, and a self-repairing barrier that will need an even better gear to get through. The exit above isn't of any use, because you'll end up there later. Just head up, and jump over the electricity to the left to find a box. Then find the self-repairing door. Try to drill in it, and walk back. Grutch: "This looks like the exit, but they've blocked it off. You'll need a third hear to drill through that barrier like butter!" So, head down and enter that door. Drill into the wall and take the lift up. For a small reward, jump onto the platforms and dig into the hole in the upper left corner. Nothing like a reward for your hard work. Right, just continue then. You'll find the third gear, which is the best gear, and extremely nice to play with, since it doesn't run out. Gearmo: "WHOA! You just found a third gear! You've gotta try that thing out! Hold down R when you hit the highest gear to keep the drill spinning. At third gear, you'll be boring through blocks like butter! Bust down everything in sight and show them you mean business!" So let's have fun. Just drill, drill, drill to the left and enter the next room. After you destroyed the barrier, someone has to bother you again. Grutch: "Keep your drill spinning to deflect incoming fire! Just don't drill into missiles or bombs, or you'll be sorry!" He's right. Don't drill into missiles or bombs, or they'll just explode. However, the upcoming enemies are only shooting bullets, so take them out and find the exit (you'll end up in the room with the barrier you couldn't destroy until now). Make sure you open all the red boxes, and not the steel block you can't pass (it's a different one than the other steel box). Now destroy the barrier and you'll be able to enter the lift, which leads back up. Head left to find a box, and where you started. The whole is gone, but you can't go up that way. Instead, head to the right to find a tank. Gearmo: "Look out! There's a tank up ahead! Try drilling into the hole on its nose!" The difficulty is to drill on the right height. First avoid the two missiles (don't drill them, as Grutch mentioned) and he hatch will stay open for a short moment. Then jump and land a drill right there. Two times at third gear will do it. Grab the box and continue. Grutch: "Don't forget that you can drill the other direction, Boss! Press the opposite button to rotate your drill the other way!" Gearmo: "The opposite of R is L, and the opposite of L is R! I don't have to draw you a picture, do I?" Stating the obvious... then again, the game is created by people who did Pokemon. It makes sense somehow. Drill the door open (doesn't have to be all the way) and enter the other side. Then get the barrier down by closing it again (yes, this includes drilling the wall away first). Let's leave this area! Gearmo: "You made it back! Right on! I'll come pick you up!" The drill-mobile (or something) will come by and you'll jump into it, ninja style. Your Drill-machine didn't make it through, though. Gearmo: "Whoa! Your Drill Dozer really took a beating! Your Drill Dozer's gears won't last forever, you know. They get worn away over time from hard use. Don't sweat it, though. I'll patch 'er up as best as I can." *Time passes* Gearmo: "You're all fixed up! The only thing is, you're back down to just one gear. Other than that, your Drill Dozer should be just like new, cutie!" Grutch: "Gearmo! You can't disrespect your boss like that! You know those Skullker thugs roughed up her dad, Doug! So Jill is taking over as the boss of the Red Dozers while he is recovering. She's the boss, now! You can't call her cutie!" Gearmo: "All right, all right. It's just a nickname! Sheesh. So you managed to escape from that trap, but this time... We're taking back the Red Diamond they stole from us!" From this moment on, you can select what you want to play on the map. You can head into the tutorial area, but you can't finish it yet anyway. ============================================================================== Area 1-2 - Skullker Factory [DD.03.03] ============================================================================== Grutch: "Boss! Don't forget that you're back to using just one gear now! You're gonna have to find more gears to upgrade your Drill Dozer!" Head inside, and fight the enemies. Once you notice two small yellow blocks, dig up there to find a hidden space with some chips. Continue to the right. You'll find another space just a bit further with some more yellow blocks (3 in a row). Enter the door ahead. Grutch: "Do you see that weird yellow jelly block above your head? Drill into it, and then reverse your drill to fly backwards. Try using this technique to get to places you normally can't reach. Want me to go over that again, Boss? Reverse the drill direction while it's drilling into a block to jump back." Gearmo: "The higher the hear you're in, the higher you'll jump! Try shifting up to the highest gear, then slam it in reverse!" Do what they say, Drill into it with one direction (L or R), and then press the opposite direction (if you pressed L, press R, if you pressed R, press L). You'll reach the platform ahead and be the hero of the day. Head up and right to find the second gear. Isn't that great? Now head back a little bit, and find the yellow jelly block you use to reach a steel platform (it's the second jelly block). Get above it, on the platform, and drop yourself down. When you are on the right height, dig into it and reach the second gear. Reverse and you'll reach a platform with a treasure; Round Stone. Grutch: "You found some treasure! Nothing makes thieves like us happier than finding some loot, eh? Go see your treasure collection in the treasure room!" Ah, yea, great, we found a stone. Not just a stone, but a round stone! That's some treasure. The chest is worth more, but whatever. Head up by using the jelly blocks. One block will have a normal block close - be sure to destroy the normal one first and continue to the next room. A fun boss fight. Nothing hard though. Three kind of enemies will be dropped into the room (two that jump, one that shoots). It goes without saying that the one that shoots should be destroyed first. After you destroyed all the enemies, the robot will lower something. Stand under it, jump, and drill into it. Enter the next room when you're done. Some jumping, some drilling... You'll notice that the door on the other side, on the left, is closed. Let's head up instead (note how the electricity has an open space underneath it, why put the electricity there in the first place?). There is only one door you can reach once you went up, so enter it. Computers... and computers have... chips! Don't forget the screens above. Grutch: "You're getting pretty good with that Drill Dozer of yours! But we're not dealing with common thieves here. Don't let your guard down! Try pressing B to stand up in your cockpit and glance around. That way, you can scout out the whole area around you!" Dig through the crack in the floor, and pull over the switch. You'll activate the lift, which is a good thing. Destroy more computers and enter the door. You'll be in the previous room again, and end up at the door that was closed (and it'll still be closed). Don't bother with the enemies, just head up and take the lift to the other side. Assuming you want a nice red box, head down, destroy the enemies and find the yellow jelly block. Use it to reach it, and then head down and go right (if possible, ignore the enemies. Fall down while drilling can help here). In this room, you'll have to jump a bit, but you'll also notice an enemy that can shoot. The key to this is to jump two times in a row, and dig straight into it. The robots ahead can't hit you because of the red box. Then just head to the right (it's a bit tricky, I agree). Outside is a new kind of enemy - they'll fly and drop down when you walk under them. Just walk under them, so they drop down and then drill them into tiny little pieces. After that, head to the right until you find a lift. Destroy the block and use it to find a box. However, you'll notice you can't go any further. Head to the right, destroy the wave of enemies and continue. This time, you'll battle two tanks at the same time. It's not really hard though, as long as you don't mess things up (in that case, things will get out of sync). The left tank will shoot one missile, and open its hatch. The right tank will follow, and open its hatch too. Avoid the one from the left, the one from the right, and then attack the tank on the right. Switch to second gear, but don't complete it, since the left tank will shoot another missile while you're busy. Once the right tank is destroyed, the left tanker will go berserk and shoot three missiles, and open its hatch for a very short time. Stay close, avoid the missiles and destroy it too. One more drill will do it. Head up until you reach a socket lift, that swings around. Get to the other side and get the third gear and continue. Head up here, and enter the building on the left again. Now these jumping robots are annoying. They set themselves on a high voltage, and if you hit them, you'll be electrified. Just time it right and continue. Take the lift up for a nice call (well it's been a while, hasn't it?). Grutch: "To squeeze through gaps in walls that you can't drill through... Just crouch and press A to dash and shoot the hap!" The man said it... That's almost Metroid, isn't it? Keep going. If you care for those chips, drill the wall that's "hurt". Stand next to the wall, and dash. You'll end up exactly on the small brick. Dash again and jump onto the next platform. Go as far to the right as you can, and dash again. There you go. NOW GET TO THE RIGHT! Head up again, and to the left, and head all the way left for some big chips. Watch out for the enemies, obviously. Head up, and don't stop it. You'll find a jelly block. Use it in third gear to reach the box with chips on the right. Basically, you get into third gear, reverse, and drill into thin air in order to reach the red box. After that, continue to the right. Noted the nice fancy wooden door? Good. Noticed how the music changed? Not so good. Jill goes straight after the treasure. Croog: "What, have you never heard of knocking?! It drives me INSANE when people do that!" Gearmo: "That's Croog... He's the evil megaboss of the Skullkers!" Grutch: "That's the Red Diamond they stole from us! Don't they know your mom left you that when she died? I can't believe they would stoop that low! Only the most repulsive villain would do something like that." Croog: "A villain?! Hah! That's pretty rich coming from a gang of thieves! Tough luck! I stole it fair and square! But if you really want it that badly... Nah. I think I'll keep it. Ta-ta!" Gearmo: "Dang! He's getting away!" Grutch: "Go get him!" Two points of complaint here; 1. So everyone can hear your conversations? That's not really something I find satisfying. 2. Who builds a metal shaft into his roof? So... go after him! Wait! You are angry. Drill away his furniture. That'll teach him. Then enter the skull-door. A lift... a heal-box... silence... perhaps something is waiting for you... perhaps... perhaps.. Perhaps if you destroy the barrier, head outside and face big tank-like thing. That might be a problem. Croog: "Hey, shorty! I'm over here! Muwahahaha! If you want your precious Red Diamond back, you'll have to beat me! I don't have much to worry about, 'cause that will NEVER happen. Muhahahaha!" Gearmo: "Watch out for the Scorpion Dozer's wicked tail! You know, that thing with the big drill on the end? When he uses that drill, give him a taste of his own awful medicine!" Now this is pretty easy, actually. Shift to third gear, and attack the drill. It'll hurt the guy a bit. Head back, and do the same. When the throws in bombs, stop drilling and avoid them (get close and let hem explode, or jump over them). Right after the bombs, he'll use his drill again. Just keep drilling his drill, and it's game over for Mr. Pokemon. Did I say Pokemon? I meant Croog. Croog: "You got spunk, kid! I have to admire that. But all the spunk in the world isn't gonna save you now! Muwahaha!" * Dr. Robotnik/Eggman shows him emerald. I mean Croog* Croog: "Oh, hey. You know that Red Diamond I swiped from you? I've figured out how to harness its awesome destructive power! Muwaaaahahahaha!" Just do some fun stuff. Just dance around your room, visit the bathroom, jump in the game... You'll get a call anyway. Gearmo: "Whoa! I saw something shiny in that scorpio's mouth! Aha! I've got it! When it opens its mouth, give it a drill!" Isn't this just Sonic re-arranged? Someone got an emerald, amazing power, he fails... Either way, do what Gearmo says. The guy comes close, and you just drill into it. After that, 3x3 bombs are released, so just jump over them. Then drill him again, and it's game over. Croog: "That was pretty impressive for a pink-haired, ponytailed Red Dozer! You beat me, so I guess I have to give you back this Red Diamond. Yeah, right! HAH! Like I'm going to go to the trouble to steal it only to give it away! Muwahahaha!" *Entering the Drill-mobile* Grutch: "Oh, no... After all that, Croog ran off with our Red Diamond! And we're not gonna stop hunting him until we steal it back!" Gearmo: "Word on the street is they headed for the Art Gallery! Oh, some guy stopped by to visit. I'd never seen him before. Who was that?" Grutch: "Oh! You don't now him? That's an old buddy of mine that runs this stop. You should grab as many chips as you can while you're roaming around. Then, you can spend them at his shop to buy all kinds of great stuff. You can buy energy tanks from him and use them to upgrade your Drill Dozer!" So now you can buy more stuff! Goooooo you! ============================================================================== Area 2-1 - Art Museum [DD.03.04] ============================================================================== Right when you start, you'll get ambushed - so drill way. Clear the area (not the glass, mind you, it'd ruin my joke). Once you did it all, head for the glass. All thieves enter through there (you too). Voila. Grutch: "Boss! Can you hear me? It looks like you've made it inside! Our stolen Red Diamond was taken to the museum! Let's get it back!" Let's do that another time Grutch. In the next version of the guide! ============================================================================== Treasures [DD.04.01] ============================================================================== 01. ??? 02.
