(30,4KB) Version 1.1 (12/14/07) - Added some stuff. (31,1KB) ============================================================================== Introduction [PT.02.01] ============================================================================== "Portal is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay. The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation. Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space." ============================================================================== Walkthrough [PT.03.01] ============================================================================== Some hints and tips to get you started: * When I tell you to create a portal, I don't care what color it is. * Unlike my Half-Life guides, I won't list the chapters, but I'd use the chambers. It's easier that way. * Also unlike my Half-Life guides, I won't mention when the game loads. It either loads when you step into an elevator, or it doesn't. And the biggest note; THIS GUIDE CONTAINS SPOILERS! Don't use it if you don't want the game to be spoiled for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 00 [PT.03.02] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You wake up from your sleep, to get greeted by a voice. Wait until the computer generates a portal and step through it. Follow the path and step on the button. Grab a cube and put it on the button. Then take the elevator up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 01 [PT.03.03] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In this chamber, there is a portal which switches positions. Get the cube, put it on the button and then exit the room. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 02 [PT.03.04] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A weapon will shoot portals here. Wait until it creates a portal near you, then step into it and grab the device. You can now create one color portal on your own. Later on we'll be able to create orange ones. Leave the room. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 03 [PT.03.05] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ All you need to do here is create a portal near your current location to cross the gap. Then shoot a new portal near the exit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 04 [PT.03.06] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A device will drop cubes (Weight Companions) on the floor. Shoot a portal underneath one and put it on the button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 05 [PT.03.07] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Move around the room and collect two cubes. Put them on the buttons. When you move forward, shoot a portal near you to land on the glass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 06 [PT.03.08] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some new device is shooting electric balls (as seen in Half-Life 2), that bounce a few times and then 'die'. Create a portal on the ceiling underneath the other device. The ball will enter the portals and land in the device. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 07 [PT.03.09] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Do the same as in the previous room. This will activate the lift. Create a portal on the ceiling and wait until it's safe to drop down. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 08 [PT.03.10] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Slightly more advanced. Create a portal where the ball would bounce. This will make the ball fly towards another wall. Quickly create another portal on the wall opposite the device that needs it, and the ball will bounce against the wall, enter the orange portal and shoot straight into the device. Use the lift to leave. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 09 [PT.03.11] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Don't worry, it's not impossible. Notice how there is a hole above the force field. Create a portal to the other room through that and send the box that way. Put it on the button and voila. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 10 [PT.03.12] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This room teaches you how to use momentum. Create a portal on the walls (look behind you) then jump down into the other portal to be sent off flying. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 11 [PT.03.13] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Create a portal and wait until the device shoots one where you can exit. Press the button to open a timed door. Shoot a portal in this room, then wait until the device creates an orange portal near you. Enter it. Create a new portal where the ball would hit the wall and wait until the lift is activated. Then step on the lift using a portal and grab the device. From now on you can use both color portals using the left and right mouse button. Press the button and create a portal behind the door. Then create one at the end of the lift and enter it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 12 [PT.03.14] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the same as room 10, but now you create your own portals. When you get to the top, one wall will move a bit. Create a new portal there and use it to get to the other side of the room. Put a block on the button to solve this. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 13 [PT.03.15] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Use portals to get the cube and put it on the button. Shoot a new portal into the upcoming room and take the cube with you. Put the cube on a button using portals. When this is done, activate the device with the ball, so the lift starts to work. Grab the other cube, put it on the other button and we are done. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 14 [PT.03.16] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You can skip all the puzzles by creating a portal in front of the exit and another by the retracting stairs. If you want to do the puzzles however... Walk towards the device (note stairs will pop up when you come near). Turn around and the stairs will go down. Create a portal and another one opposite of the cube to get the cube. Put it on the button and enter the door. Watch out, since the platforms go up and down. Head into the room with the ball and create a portal. Step through it and adjust the other portal so it activates the device. This will active the elevator. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 15 [PT.03.17] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Time to use your momentum again. Create a portal at the highest possible wall and one down at the ground. Step into the portal at the ground, land in the same portal again and you'll be launched over the wall. In the next room, create a portal where the ball hits the wall, and another one so it will go towards the room with the device. Once the ball has been through the portal, step into the room with the device and make it so the ball hits it. In the next room is about momentum again. Create a portal at the highest possible point, then move into the room on the side of it. Create a portal in the lower part of the room and jump through. As you enter the portal, look down and make another portal where you will land, so your momentum increases and you reach the other side. Here do the same to get over the wall. Make two portals, so the ball activates the device. To leave the room, create a portal on a wall, wait for a lift to come by, create a new one etc. The last room is fun. Take an elevator up and once up, create a portal the room you are in and one in the room with the other button. Hit the button, go through the portal and hit the other one. Quickly create two new portals - one where the ball hits the floor, the other opposite the device. Problem solved. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 16 [PT.03.18] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A fun level with turrets. Nothing hard though. Navigate through this level by dropping things on turrets like cubes or other turrets. At the end of the course drop a cube on the button. Move behind the next turret and disable it. To get past the last turret, just create a portal in the hall and ignore it completely. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 17 [PT.03.19] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Possibly the best level in the game, even if it's just because of the companion cube. Grab the thing and move around the corner. Use the cube to reach higher platforms, then look back and take it with you. Also use it as a shield as you walk to the main room. You need to active three devices. The first one is easy. Take your cube in the left room and use it to deflect the ball of energy into the device. The second device can be activated by going in the other room. Put the cube on the button in the end of the room and head back towards the balls. Create one portal where the ball would hit the wall and another opposite of the second device. You operate the first button yourself, so head back to that room, wait for the ball to pass and step on the button. The last device is easy. Create one portal at the place where the other ball hits the wall, and the other portal in the main room, so the ball will bounce into the device. Take your cube with you and jump across the platforms that highered. Put your cube on the button here, activate the timer and throw your cube into the pit. Goodbye cube. Goodbye level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 18 [PT.03.20] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The first part of this level shouldn't be a problem - it's just your basic momentum again. The second part can be tricky however. We need to find a box for the button here, so continue to the next room. If you hit the timed button here, the wall will come out. Enter the new room from the left (from the right will lead to your end). There is a moving device that shoots balls. The turrets in this room can be knocked over by using the right position of portals, so get started. When the turrets are all gone, you need get the lift started. The device is behind a timed door, plus the button to open it can't be reached from your current position. What you need to do is get a ball in the direction of the device. Once the ball came out of the portal, quickly set up two different portals so you can launch yourself to the button to open the door. If done right, the lift will be activated. Jump on the lift and go down to the lower room. With the button here, you can bring the wall back in the position when it comes out. Create a portal next to it and another one in the room you are. Hit the timer and enter the portal. Now quickly create a portal at the wall and another one at the platform that's at water-level (look to the right of the door). Jump down and you'll be launched at the only room you haven't been in yet. Grab a cube and bring it to the other side. Open the wall again, and bring the cube with you to continue. This is a fun part. There is a really deep hole here. Create one portal here and the other at the platform that's in the water. Now jump down. As you get launched out of the other portal, create a new one at the platform that's higher than the one you are at. If you keep doing this, you'll reach the end of the level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Testchamber 19 [PT.03.21] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Activate the device here to get the lift started. Hop on the lift and find the room with the timed button. Open the door with it, and create a portal behind it. Hop on the lift when possible. To get past the bouncing ball, you have to create a portal in front of it and one behind it. You can stand on the edge of a portal when done correctly. You can use the same technique to get past the wall around the corner. Instead of the promised cake, it seems you are going straight for a pit of fire. While also fun, I recommend escaping by creating a portal at the balcony and going there. Using momentum you can reach the upper part of the room. Nothing like you saw before, right? (well if you looked properly you actually should have) Follow the path until you stumble upon a closed door. You easily create a portal behind it, so no worries. Carry on. You just need to continue following the linear path until you come upon a broken pipe of glass. Enter it and follow the path. You'll end up back in testchamber 09, but the lift is not there. Use this opportunity to go down. Keep on going until you stumble upon a room with devices that go up and down. Two of them go up all the way, to the ceiling. Create a portal at the highest platform and one at the ceiling, so the device would kill you if the portal wasn't there. Instead you end up at higher ground. More linear stuff here. Eventually you'll end up in a room with turrets attacking you from three sides. Quickly get rid of them. One of the rooms allows you to go higher, by creating a portal in another room. In the room with the green power generators, create one at the diagonal piece of wall, and one at the floor. Gently walk into it, then use your momentum to launch yourself to the higher platform. When you find a timed button, a rocket-launching-turret will come up and destroy the glass. When you continue, you'll find a glass pipe, but it's not broken. You guessed it. Put one portal underneath the glass pipe and one somewhere in the room with the rocket-launching-turret. Lure a rocket inside the portal to break the pipe. Use the cube to continue. You can also ignore this whole deal and use a chair to get on top of the tube. You'll eventually end up in a room with lots of turrets. Get rid of all of them. There is a diagonal wall here, so get to the highest possible point and use your momentum. When you keep going after that, you'll find the boss. Now this fight is pretty easy. Something will drop down from the boss. Create a portal near the disposer and one near the building. Inside is a timed button. Throw the thing that fell from the boss into the disposer. The boss will now summon a rocket-launching-turret, and give you 6 minutes to finish her off, since she puts gas in the air. You guessed it - lure rockets into a portal that hit the boss. Every time you get a hit, something will fall off. Grab it with a portal and get rid of it. Do this a total of three times and the boss is finished. The spheres always drop at the same locations: 1 - Underneath GLaDOS 2 - On top of a big pipe coming out of the wall 3 - On top of a glass platform above GLaDOS 4 - Handing in mid-air (use a portal and repeatedly hit 'E' to get it) Enjoy one of the best credits known to mankind. I'm being so sincere right now. ============================================================================== Cheats & Secrets [PT.04.01] ============================================================================== ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Console Cheats [PT.04.02] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Open the console (~-key), and enter sv_cheats 1. Can you help me? A: Are you using a downloaded version? Then please don't even bother mailing me, since that version comes with more problems than anything else. This is not because of the game, but it's because it's the downloaded version. And by that I meant the illegal means of downloading. Q: Can I disable the title screen's background? Loading the title screen takes ages... A: Yes, find the file valve.rc in the /portal/cfg dir, and add // in front of startupmenu . This will fix it. Just to be sure, it'll look like this: // display the startup level // startupmenu Q: My sound stutters, what can I do? A: There is a patch that should fix a few things, but if that doesn't work, you can try the following things: * If you're using more than 2 speakers, go back to 2 speakers. * Lower the sound quality. * Lower your graphical settings, including AA, resolution and texture quality. Q: You're missing cheats! A: Sorry, mail me which ones please. ============================================================================== Conclusion [PT.09.01] ============================================================================== I hope you enjoyed my guide, since I put a lot of work in it.
